Attention to Those Who Steal From Service-Disabled Veteran Owned Small Businesses (SDVOSB)

The Governmental Accountability Office, or GAO, discovered fraud and abuse in he SDVOSB (Service-Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business Program); see report GAO-10-306T (http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d10306t.pdf).

Pardon the old chief for not being surprised but there are numerous veterans’ organizations that knew about and had complained for decades to the SBA (Small Business Administration) and DVA (Dept. of Veterans Affairs) about businesses which falsely self-certified on the CCR (Central Contracts Register) as SDVOSB and reaped multiple fat contracts in the billions of dollars to literally STEAL from service-disabled veterans who were trying to build a business having not being able to find work due to prejudice, misconceptions, stereotypes and simple ignorance concerning veterans, particularly disabled ones.

That is why the SDVOSB Program was created: to bring about opportunities for veterans to achieve self-sufficiency through rehabilitation via entrepreneurship by creating opportunities to that end. To mince no words those who masquerade as SDVOSB are the scum of the earth deserving to be held up for public ridicule, stripped of their ill-gotten wealth and tossed into federal prisons. But that won’t happen as these bottom-feeding scumbags, even after having been discovered, were allowed to keep their contracts and make billions as borne out in the GAO report.

So what could one reasonably conclude? These dirt-bags were protected by buying influence and assuring that whatever laws that were in place had no enforcement by having no consequence. Take a look at, directly from the report, a conveniently unidentified firm in Chico, CA, that received $5 million from the Veterans Administration, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Agricultural Research Service, and the U.S. Forest Service in Wally Herger’s District. According to the GAO report the firm was ineligible because it does not perform any work and subcontracts 100 percent of the work to non-SDVOSB firms. Further the investigation found that the firm employs three full-time workers and performs SDVOSB contract work with employees from a large international-based corporation that reported almost $12 billion in annual revenue in 2008. Additionally the firm received over 20 SDVOSB contracts since 2008 and is currently listed in VA’s database of verified SDVSOB firms.

Enough lip-service from Washington. It's time for seriously powerful laws with draconian penalties for stealing opportunities from service-disabled veterans.

Calling the Executives of the Bailedout Financials

It would appear that the administration found its spine and is going to chop you off at the wallet. To be blunt getting your pay and benefits slashed is but a slap on your thieving hands when they should be chopped off.

You work for US now, the taxpayers. You robbed us blind by wiping out retirement investments, making millions homeless and vaporizing hundreds of thousands of jobs to profit obscenely in your wanton destruction of economies here and abroad. You then took the bailouts and expected business as usual with no consequences now or in the future. You steaming piles of odiferous, fly-encrusted excrement are elitist scum that believe you are superior to the average American upon whom you prey like financial vampires. You believe yourselves above the law and haven’t the slightest concept of morals, scruples or ethics.

If it were a perfect world mobs of your countless victims would have stormed your office towers, dragging all of you to the streets to be drenched in boiling tar and feathered as government seized all of your assets leaving you completely impoverished to ultimately scrub toilets in the public restrooms of bus stations in the blighted cities you helped to create.

My contempt for you as that of your victims is bottomless. Rest assured that your enablers whom you have bought through donations (read: "bribes") will pay at the polls and legislation to assure you never pull off further crimes is inevitable.

Calling All Former Census Employees

My sources inside the census informed me that the Census Bureau is not reporting the wages of census employees to the various state unemployment bureaus. Consequently laid off census employees are not receiving unemployment benefits or are receiving less benefits than those to which they are entitled.

The company which was contracted to report the wages of census employees to state unemployment bureaus, TALX UC Express, claims that the census failed to report wages to it. The census, conversely, claims that it reported wages to TALX UC Express. If this were true then the census should be compelling TALX UC Express to do the work for which it was contracted. In reality the census has done nothing and TALX UC Express is collecting its money as usual from the US Treasury. Federal contracting as usual it would appear.

What is most baffling is why the affected census employees are remaining quiet rather than screaming to their representatives and the media about this inexcusable situation that is hurting them financially. So I must ask census employees: are you afraid that if you speak up you won’t be called back to work in future phases? If that is the case why would you want to return to work for an employer that cares nothing about you?

From my inside sources I’ve learned that the Census Bureau is anything but employee-centric. Employees were compelled to work uncompensated overtime to meet ever changing priorities under threat of termination, verbally abused by management as well as by the tinfoil hat and black helicopter crowd they encountered, threatened at gunpoint by paranoid meth cookers and pot growers in the sticks. Worse one census employee was murdered in Kentucky the facts of which the Census Bureau, through the FBI, tried to squelch by actually suggesting it was possibly a suicide. The facts of the last example remain obfuscated and buried by a paranoid Census Bureau that resorts to ludicrous assertions to protect itself.

To Robert M. Groves, Director of the Bureau of the Census: you, sir, have failed miserably in your duties. It would seem that you view this position as just that – a “position” with no responsibilities and a staff whose sole purpose is to avoid, evade and dodge responsibility and accountability to protect you and themselves. I am in possession of a letter from a concerned former census employee to you and your agency’s response. To even the most mentally vacuous reading the correspondence to and from you it is painfully obvious that, in the bluntest terms, covering your ass is paramount.

Mr. Groves, you can either do what is right, moral, decent, lawful and proper or face public ridicule though the media as THIS correspondent, unlike you, takes his duties VERY seriously.

Be on the Lookout for Wall Street's Latest SCAM

Wall Street has now found something to replace the mortgage backed investment having destroyed the housing market, the economy in general and countless millions of lives. The new scam is to buy the insurance policies of the elderly and those with fatal diseases.

This time however they plan on minimizing potential losses by not bundling all of the same diseases, say, melanoma, together in the event a cure is found. So there will be a wide array of fatal diseases as well as a broad range of ages to assure fat profits in every bundle.

To assure those profits are even fatter they'll be buying these policies at around twenty-cents on the dollar from people desperate for money having no medical insurance, needing expensive therapies and drugs to stay alive along with the elderly who lost everything when their investments vaporized thanks to – you guessed it – Wall Street.

All of this would lead one to reasonably conclude that Wall Street will fight national health care tooth and nail with every dollar at its disposal through ad campaigns of outright lies and bottomless deceit. The disgusting hateful behavior exhibited at town halls will be friendly whispers considering what Wall Street will initiate to protect its profits. More reprehensible is that money used to fight healthcare by Wall Street will come from the government bailouts using your tax dollars.

Mincing no words while remaining printable, being the filthy, greedy piles of steaming, odiferous, fly infested feces those on Wall Street truly are, I would dare venture that the gangs in the board rooms will pick policies at random and start "death pools" for their perverse enjoyment. Considering that they live like fat, ancient Roman royalty with utter contempt for the lives of the ordinary citizens from whom they distanced themselves with stolen wealth I wouldn’t doubt for a moment that they would engage in such morbid pleasures. Remember the Enron employee caught on tape laughing at the idea of someone’s grandmother freezing in the dark?

This morbid plan to profit off of the elderly and dying must be stopped. If not, they will do everything in their power to keep healthcare for all from becoming a reality while assuring that funding for medical research becomes a dry well, all to assure that they profit handsomely from the deaths of a new pool of victims - desperate victims clinging to their lives.

I’m not certain which is worse: this oxycotin-gobbling, bloated, arrogant, self-important, ubber-wealthy, gasbag of the airwaves that passes for a human being or his mindless, drooling, knuckle-dragging, imbecile audience that hangs on his every lying, twisted word. Apparently his audience is numerous, a frightening condemnation of American intelligence, as evidenced by the sponsors that are lined-up checks in hand to pander to his Kool-Aid guzzling listeners who would eat steaming bovine droppings if he told them to do so and gladly pay his sponsors for the privilege.

In evidence of this observation I was leaving the doctor’s office one day and, as I strode through the parking lot to my motor, I saw an elderly gent of perhaps eighty, no doubt having left his wife to get the bad news alone, sitting in his Buick, windows down, as he listened to “Rush to the Druggist” at about 800 or more decibels (those Buicks have some serious speakers from the factory). What was eerie and damned frightening was that this old fellow was staring at the hedges before him, mouth agape, with a vacant expression. It were as if he were totally mesmerized and that is no exaggeration. I stood in disbelief ready to perform CPR and call for paramedics if he didn’t blink within the next three minutes. However I was certain he was alright as he wiped some spittle from his lower lip so I straddled my motor and rode off.

What was more frightening was that when I did the math of how many there were just like this old gent who not only listen to America’s Joseph Goebbels but follow his every command as evidenced by those who voted for “I Got Mine So Screw You Shipmate McCain” and “Caribou Barbie” I absolutely shuddered. There are millions of normal appearing people who are functionally developmentally disabled that have voted for those in the pockets of the very people who would make them homeless and destitute in the blink of an eye for a nickel of profit.

But when old “Let This Idiot Do YOUR Thinking For You Limbaugh” stated on air that he wants Obama to fail it was most telling of how he bows before his masters and leads his lemmings to their demise for his fat paydays. This pompous pile of lard would sell his soul (if he had one) as he leads his blind, deaf and brain-dead faithful to work against their own interests because if Obama fails EVERYONE fails. Jobless, homeless, destitute people are not consumers but Rush and his pals are in it for the fast buck now and don’t care who gets hurt in the process. He and his sponsors will be living fat and large as millions of his listeners eat dog food under a bridge in a blizzard.

Then again what could one expect from a cowardly, souless, draft/service evading, drug addicted, pompous piece of excrement who cares nothing for anyone but himself and his owners. If Limbaugh were in a lifeboat should the ship on which one of his “Rush to Excellence” cruises takes place sinks he would hit the drowning with an oar to keep them from pulling themselves aboard so he could have all of the rations to himself.

Damned few post anything addressing the subject of the individual threads but rather want to spout their self-centered and all too frequently hair-brained rants all over the board. If the thread is about oranges then rest assured people will post about legalizing pot as that what seems to be on their minds (or clouding them). One knucklehead even offered a free donut to anyone who could guess the number of donuts he could fit on his "pole". Add in the angry, bitter right-wing hacks posting and voting down anything with which they don't agree and it gets funnier if not more pathetic (Sarah? Is that YOU?). And, of course, the most popular idea is making the US the "greenest nation on the planet", obviously posted and supported by those who plan to ride their unicorns over the rainbow bridge to the beach campfire to make smores with Smurfs. Apparently they don't live in the "real" world but are in college or high school and have copius free time to post idealistic dribble between bong hits and classes while sucking on the teats of both mommy and daddy.

Meanwhile, in the "real" world, people are losing their savings, jobs and homes. Thousands of disabled veterans are being tossed into the streets to fend for themselves. Banks are being emboldened with cash infussions from our tax dollars to cover their bad bets that resulted from their sheer, unregulated greed so that they can continue business as usual - which is screwing people at every opportunity. While the rich get richer the average American is tossed under the economic bus. Institutions are "too big to fail" yet we are "too small to succeed". None-the-less smoking dope, being green and mass transit are the "most popular" issues on the Citizens' Briefing Book.

Whatever may reach PE Obama from the Citizens' Briefing Book will appear as if it were written by a bunch of stoned imbeciles who deserve to be abused and ripped-off by government as usual. The PE would be better off if he were to poll all of his donors that gave $100 or less rather than have his staff wade through this endless stupidity. Then, perhaps, he'd know what his thinking supporters actually have to say other than "we want free twinkies 'cuz we're stoned". Unfortunately the only ones who donated that got "face time" with the PE are the select few that donated $100K or more. The rest of us are just voices in the wilderness to never be heard because we can't write out checks with a lot of zeroes before the decimal point.

For the record I voted for Obama being sick of being sold out by the Republicans (of whom I was never one) but I fear, the more I read and learn, that Obama has debts to pay and not to the voters that brought him to office.

This just in: Bush Advises Republican Party to Be 'Compassionate'

That was from today's WaPo. Now that I've stopped laughing at the absurdity of Bush's hollow, vacuous statement the anger over his endless arrogance has again taken hold. How could this empty suit and his heartless, soulless minions know anything of compassion?

What pathetic modicum of compassion could he or his party of miscreants possibly muster for anyone but their wealthy masters whom they've allowed to pillage every cent of wealth in the country to be found? His pals, aided and abetted by the Republican Party to which they hold the deed, have made people homeless, jobless and destitute at home as they profit from the suffering they’ve caused. As his cronies fatten their coffers from the war in Iraq he warehouses a whole new generation of service-disabled veterans then directs the VA to deny them benefits as they join the swelling ranks of the unemployed.

His concept of compassion is as twisted as he as evidenced by that $350B that he directed be given away to those who hold his leash. That money didn’t create one job, save one home from foreclosure or put money into the hands of those most in need. Rather that money paid the salaries and bonuses of the recipients, who deserved neither, and the rest was hoarded.

If you want compassion from Bush and his party than you’d better be able to write a check to the Republican Party with no less than five zeroes before the decimal point.

Attention all units: Don’t make another mortgage or credit card payment

Once again Treasury Secretary Paulson has announced another knuckle-headed scheme that benefits everyone but the responsible trying to keep their homes. The plan will allow for mortgages on home purchases of just 4.5%. The plan, however, is designed to move foreclosures to help predatory lenders holding homes forcefully vacated.

If you were laid off from your job, had your hours / wages / benefits cut or got suckered by “creative financing” buried in ten pages of fine print and can’t make your house payment well then it sucks to be you. You’ll still be made homeless and some vulture will scoop up what was once your home for far, far less than you paid, get basement interest rates, rent it out to someone for a payment twice what your mortgage may have been and make out like a bandit with a federal license to steal. You, however, will pay more for less of a place to live with the renter’s Sword of Damocles dangling over your head balancing food and shelter costs.

Every hair-brained plan coming from the Bush Administration while in its death throws is designed to help those who need help the least while creating a new group of homeless, working poor or unemployed as the vultures feed on the carcasses of American workers and their dreams.

$350B went to the top one percent to “stimulate” the economy through the cruel, vicious joke called trickle down economics. The top 1% hoard our tax money, pay themselves as well as their pals for destroying the economy and continue to party on as Rome burns eagerly awaiting the other $350B promised them. Meanwhile we struggle to survive at the bottom of a vacuum that sucks every cent of wealth to the top.

That total $700B translates into $30,000 for 232-million tax-paying families who, if given the money, would pay their mortgages, debts and consume moving the money upward in an economy that defies the laws of gravity.

So let me pose this simple question under the Bush Economic Plan: What if all of us, who are responsible, working people, were to simply stop making mortgage payments? What recourse would these greedy, wealthy, bottom-feeding scum have? They would have absolutely NONE. How could they possibly foreclose on every home in the nation? They couldn’t collect and they’d be compelled to negotiate or lose everything. And what if we stopped paying our credit cards at predatory interest rates that continue to increase? This, too, would force renegotiation.The only way that we can survive is to force concessions. If every home mortgage were reset to its current deflated market value and the interest reset at 4.5% foreclosures would come to an abrupt halt. If credit cards were locked-in a 9% people could make their payments. Add in $30,000 per tax-paying family and the economy would have the momentum required to start moving and growing again.There’s greed and there’s profit. Greed is what's killing us but profit, fair, reasonable profit, can rescue this nation's economy. We don’t need weapons to effect a revolution – we simply need to refuse to pay usury rates on that which no longer has value thanks to artificial manipulation by those who've been motivated by unbridled greed with a nod, nudge and wink by the Bush Administration and its party.

It’s time for the ultra wealthy at the helms of corporations whom have fed on the average American to lower THEIR expectations as I seriously doubt any CEO will be eating Alpo under a bridge in a winter storm should their business fail. We, however, will continue to fall into destitution, hunger and homelessness if we don't tell them "no damned more" by not giving them another cent of OUR money until they capitulate.

Be advised: Falling Prices Raise a New Fear - Deflation

The sky hasn't fallen yet but prices have and rapidly. This is precisely what one could logically expect when you beat down the working consumer with stagnant wages, reduced hours our simply eliminate their jobs. You greatly thin and impoverish their ranks and they lose faith and stop spending which only worsens the situation. Falling prices equate to continuing shrinking wages and more job losses.

While people are losing their jobs and homes the greedy responsible for the economic implosion are getting government handouts and living very, very well as they hoard our tax money instead of lending it, blow it on lavish corporate retreats, pay their pals dividends and give us all the finger with a big grin. Trickle down economics is the cruelest hoax ever perpetrated on the working American.

No more money for these pigs (and that is precisely what they are). It’s time for trickle up economics and not a pathetic, paltry $600 joke stimulus check. This economy will never get any inertia unless the consumer gets a real infusion of cash from the money that they’ve paid in taxes. That $700B give-away would equate to $30,000 for 232-million taxpaying families earning under $150,000 annually - enough to halt foreclosures and get people spending once again. Unfortunately this idea makes sense and doesn’t directly benefit the ubber wealthy alone by bypassing us.

Pump $30,000 in each household, force all lenders to reduce interest to 4% on all mortgages written since 1 Jan 2001 and force credit card companies to drop their interest rates to 8% and this economy will get rolling again.

It's time for the corporate rich to lower THEIR expectations.

$700B for Wall Street Raiders and the Shaft for Us

The proposed Wall Street bailout is reverse socialism in the name of capitalism. In this case the government takes from the poor, to wit the average, middle-class taxpayer, to give to wealthy corporations. And make no mistake that they are still wealthy as the CEOs, CFOs, et al aren't going to lose a penny of the fortunes that they'd amassed under the Bush Administration’s blank check now with no questions, oversight nor punitive measures. The reality is that the institutions they've run into the ground are their cash cows and they expect the taxpayer to save them so that they can continue to suckle at the teats. If the institution dies it’s someone else's money that vaporizes - not theirs – as they have their golden parachutes packed before the shareholders receive a cent should anything remain.

These robber-barons at every level knew they were building time bombs to hand off to the unsuspecting. Mortgage brokers at the base pushed through loans that they knew would end up in default but didn't care as they got their fees and commissions in the front. Then the actual mortgage holders bundled good loans around bad and sold them before they could detonate in massive foreclosures. The people that are suffering the most are those who invested for their retirement and are watching their accounts tank. Those people would be the afore-mentioned "middle class" that government is killing off by aiding and abetting business and financial institutions at every level.

The only way a bailout should occur is in the form of loans and if there are caveats attached regardless if they would “discourage” these firms from seeking help as Mr. Paulson and Mr. Bernanke would have us believe. They can either accept the caveats or go under but they should not be allowed to continue to profit through an infusion of tax dollars while taxpayers providing the funding continue to lose their homes and savings to the very ones responsible for this economic implosion.

Without the following there should be no “bailout” loans:

1. Complete, unfettered, non-partisan oversight,
2. A set minimum portion of any future profits goes to a fund to repay the treasury,
3. No employee of the corporation can receive a salary greater than that of the highest paid federal civil servant nor can they receive any bonuses, stock options or any other additional
money over their salaries until the treasury is repaid,
4. Binding arbitration with distressed homeowners to prevent further foreclosures with a ten-percent credit of the value of the loan toward the debt to the government for each successfully re-negotiated mortgage preventing a foreclosure, and,
5. In the event arbitration fails to prevent a foreclosure, the homeowner will be forgiven any debt that may arise from any difference from the amount owed and the sale price of the home and that the forgiveness of any such difference shall not be taxed as income by the IRS.

The Whitehouse plan pitched by Mr. Paulson and Mr. Bernanke is nothing but free money with no strings allowing Wall Street moguls to continue to profit while more Americans continue to become penniless and homeless - period.

Wall Street and their Whitehouse enablers are joined at the wallet and they want to openly raid our wallets again. I'd rather see Wall Street implode from its own, unregulated greed and charge those responsible under the RICO statutes then confiscate all of their personal assets as the illegal gains from a criminal enterprise rather than give them a single penny with no conditions.Yep. That voting Republican thing worked real well, didn't it?

WAPO: Crises Reveal Limits of Bush's Personal Diplomacy on World Stage

Is there any reason to believe that world leaders would perceive McCain any differently than Bush? I can see none in light of the fact that McCain has rubber-stamped Bush policy since day one despite the Bush election machine having unleashed their dogs upon McCain in 2000 in his presidential bid. Clearly it demonstrates McCain’s loyalty to his party but little else.

Bush is a lame duck and the rest of the world's leaders don't give him much thought with the presidential race revealing no clear winner from recent polls. Consequently they believe that McCain has a chance and they may be dealing with the same administration with a new figurehead for another four years.

The international policies of the past are no longer effective. Each and every conflict in the world is different politically, economically, socially and technically than the ones preceding them. These were lessons learned the hard way in 1914, 1950, 1964 and 2001 to show but a few examples. Frankly McCain is not equipped to engage in new thinking to adapt to an ever changing world; the view that you either beat-up or buy-off a bully, as both Bush and McCain believe, simply doesn’t work any longer. In the military public affairs and civil affairs arenas the motto was “winning hearts and minds” which was damned hard to do after destroying very fragile existences with misplaced ordinance and ill-conceived tactics built on bad intelligence.

As the international climate is now Obama made the right choice in Biden as a VP because Biden has the credentials abroad to negate the argument that Obama lacks the experience to act and deliver in a way that clearly demonstrates the courage of our convictions and the ability to use military might as the last resort, as it should be, all else before having failed. Simply Obama knows how to identify and recruit those who have the experience, knowledge, background and conviction to make policy reality.

It’s a new, ever-evolving world that requires fresh ideas, approaches and leadership to adapt and effect positive change. What we’ve been doing for almost these last eight years hasn’t worked abroad (or at home) so how can we reasonably expect different results if we don’t respond differently with new leadership equipped for the century in which we now live?

Calling all veterans: New evidence is in; watch John McCain closely.

Senator McCain was recently quoted in the Army Times that he would prioritize combat-disabled veterans over all other disabled veterans in the VA system for treatment and compensation. (http://www.armytimes.com/news/2008/07/military_mccain_healthcare_072308/) Making a distinction between service-disabled veterans based on how the disability was incurred simply to deny care and benefits to one group to cut expenditures is repugnant and quite telling. McCain was simply focused on combat-wounded veterans as they are a hot topic and therefore a means to gain sympathy votes from those who are not informed on his record and actual position.

The result of McCain’s plan will be a still woefully under-funded VA while shoving every other veteran out in favor of the combat-disabled to save a buck.

This is nothing new. The Bush Administration proposed creating a two-tiered VA system where, for example, a leg lost to an IED would be worth more than a leg lost in a training accident and then declare, in either case, once the veteran was able to walk with a prosthetic device that they were made whole and benefits would stop although both were still missing a leg. There was also the idea of giving the veteran a lump-sum payment for a service-connected disability before the full extent of it and its life-long implications could be evaluated.

It’s no accident under the Republicans that concurrent receipt for military retirement and disability benefits is structured with phase-ins with the actuaries betting most veterans would be dead before they could ever collect or that the VA has evolved into a system that is the veteran’s adversary rather than advocate as the object is to slash budgets on veterans' backs by directives to misdiagnose and deny disability compensation where-ever possible as evidenced by leaked VA memos.

What is not being covered in the presidential campaign coverage is that Senator McCain, despite coming from a Navy family, being an Annapolis graduate, a career Navy officer and POW, has been no friend of veterans as evidenced by his votes; he has voted against sufficient VA funding at every opportunity, watering-down current benefits, or creating new caveats to obtain them and opposed the 21st Century GI Bill.

Every voter should know and remember this: While countless veterans are on waiting lists for medical care and fighting for compensation years after their service McCain gets the very best of priority care at Bethesda Naval Hospital while collecting his Navy retirement, disability compensation and senate pay.

It was the same story then as it is now: A Republican Party that embraced the wealthy and powerful who greased their political wheels in exchange for what little wealth of everyone else their was to be taken. In 1929 as now people who’ve invested for retirement or for their children will loose everything while the corporate barons walk away unscathed and wealthier while none of those responsible for their criminal deeds, to include knowingly trading “bad paper”, predatory business practices, concealing evidence of their criminal enterprises and market manipulation, will answer before any court.

The contempt for the average, working American Joe and Jane exhibited then is evident today in everything this administration and its party do. Stocks tumble, fuel prices soar with no discernable ceiling, corn is diverted for fuel as it is more profitable thus making beef, poultry, cereal, milk and every other food more expensive, more and more are unemployed thanks to globalization for cheap foreign labor, wages are stagnant for what jobs remain, health and other benefits are available for but a few, home foreclosures are epidemic, property values are plummeting, the list is endless. And let’s not forget the homeless the vast majority being veterans.

And let us examine one classic example of early “compassionate conservatism” concerning veterans during The Great Depression of which very few are aware: The Bonus March of 1929 when Hoover turned the Army against homeless, hungry, unemployed WWI veterans peacefully protesting for a benefit they desperately needed then when the Coolidge actuaries were banking they’d all be dead when the benefit was due.

Bush and McCain simply act under the radar to under-fund the VA, direct it to misdiagnose and deny benefits and warehouse the wounded under conditions that no prisoner would be subjected while fighting against better benefits for veterans. In my heart of hearts I believe that if the new generation of veterans the Bush Administration created were to march in protest concerning their treatment and the denial of benefits they would receive the same response of arms.

Bush is holding a bloody knife as he vehemently denies attempting the murder of our economy and way of life as they slowly die before us.

The Bush-McCain timing may be off from that of Coolidge-Hoover but history will indeed repeat itself if McCain takes office. The end is only nigh if we don’t remember history and act not to repeat it.

It's happening across the country from big cities to small rural communities and it's growing in scope daily. In the farming parts of the country where there are diesel tanks to fuel equipment in the fields the thieves are steeling hundreds of gallons nightly from single sites. It simply boils down to this:

Invading Iraq created instability in that oil producing region, gave commodities traitors, er, traders, a means to rape the consumer and driven up the cost of everything while destroying our economy in the process. The no-bid oil contracts that the Bush Administration helped to broker though the puppets of the Iraqi Oil Ministry while McCain states that he wants to keep us there for 100-years or longer is proof that big oil is a benefactor of the Republican Party for large contributions and the blood of our service members was for no other reason than to secure and protect oil for market control and limitless profit.

It's no coincidence that oil shot from $36 per barrel prior to the invasion to the $144 of today. The result of unlimited, government-enabled, corporate greed is only more economic suffering for the average, working schmuck by at the hands of big oil and the incentive for thieves that gouging has created to add to that misery.

Bush, his party and their ubber-wealthy enablers are thieving, conniving, calculating, greedy, selfish, short-sighted, trecherous, unpatriotic, cowardly, sub-human scum void of all human decency - period.

Here is the classic example of dirty politics; using the anonymity of the internet “win at any cost groups” post outrageous lies in the Joseph Goebbels tradition that if it’s repeated often enough it will be taken as truth. When a close friend gets it from another close friend who got it from another close friend et al with no-one being able to quote the source it spreads like the flu only with greater intensity because of its deliberate intent by playing on ignorance, fear and peer trust. Republicans are desperate and the evidence is mounting daily.

The Republican lie machine, thankfully, cannot overcome those who think critically and independently, weighing all sources in making their choices as facts cannot be extinguished with propaganda. The numbers of the lock-step, mindless who listen intently to Rush, Sean, Bill, etc for their cues is shifting with the demographic changes influenced by a new generation of thinking veterans.

I’m one of that group on the cusp that skews the demographics. I come from a military family in which we all served and I made a career of the military as did my father. I clearly see through John McCain as do those who recently served and serve now. McCain has proven to be no friend to the military and veterans by voting against increased benefits and funding at every opportunity. Clinging to the party playbook he claims to embrace service but fails to recognize sacrifice with endless war funding yet none for the new generation of service-disabled veterans created in Iraq.

Worse, he stated he would keep us in Iraq for one-hundred years or more shortly before we learned that the big western oil companies were to be granted no bid contracts by the Iraqi Oil Ministry on the heels of a contrived oil shortage from which they, his supporters/contributors, would benefit only further at our continuing expense at the pump and from every article made from petrol-chemicals while food prices rise as crops are diverted to bio-fuels for nothing but increased profit. Simply those serving now and for a generation or more would spill more blood for a war that was for oil, no matter what Bush, Cheney, McCain, Herger and their party claim.

This I find reprehensible from a career Navy officer who was a POW but I suspect that his attitude is the result of wealth (through marriage) and too many years in the senate both of which have disconnected him from his constituents as has his adherence to the party line to maintain a base of support that is not representative of the average American that pays more for everything while seeing their real income decrease daily through corporate greed. This is further evidenced by the “mortgage meltdown” that McCain’s party created by allowing the banking/lending industry to run wild without regulation or simple oversight.

A vote foe McCain is a vote for total ruin – period.

… the fact remains that under eight-years of the GWB Administration with its excessive veto powers gained under a previously Republican controlled Congress and its slant toward profit over people everything has gone to hell in a hand basket.

The military in which I served for twenty-two years, as my father for twenty-seven, has been stretched, stripped, demoralized and filled with all BUT the best and brightest to meet recruiting goals while the broken veterans it has created from the “Iraqi Expedition” have been ignored and cast aside as a financial burden in the name of “fiscal conservatism”. There is no limit to war funding but a bottom to be found for those who’ve served – right, Wally Herger?

Here we are in the most oil rich region in the world with promises of discounted oil in exchange for liberation yet fuel prices have gone through the ceiling with no end in sight and NO discounted oil. Every product delivered that we consume daily increases in price daily due to the rising cost of fuel only furthering to hurt the average working American. Meanwhile $170M in domestic fuel is, bluntly, pissed away in the “sand boxes” to our detriment at home compounding the problem further. Futures traders buy and horde oil / fuel to obscenely increase profits by creating a greater shortage than the “war on terror” has as they create a self-fulfilling prophesy of prediction of price to demand for which they are responsible. Diesel, which costs less than gas before the war and fuels tactical vehicles now costs far more than gas and our economy suffers because diesel fuels both the rail and trucking industries that deliver the goods we need.

Corn, a staple for both people and livestock, has become more valuable for bio-fuels than food and the “agri-industry” has diverted it for greater profit. This has only added to the cost of our groceries further hurting us. No doubt Archer-Daniels-Midland, a Texas agri-company, has their hands soiled as does the oil industry in a secret quid pro quo with this administration.

The banking / mortgage industries were allowed to run wild with “creative financial products” so that they could sell bundled, bad paper to investors, many vested retirees, so that they could get their money in the front and leave grandma and grandpa holding the bag and eating Alpo in the dark having to forgo their medications and energy to simply live. Meanwhile our homes are worth less than we paid thanks to a house of cards under a fan of manipulation.

“Free trade” has created a new class of working poor as living-wage paying jobs are eliminated for cheap foreign labor and large corporations are rewarded for destroying the middle-class with tax breaks for moving to foreign shores. Further foreign companies are buying our infrastructure one brick at a time under “privatization” while providing less service for more income.

The list of destruction to our country, our economy and our people under GWB, his cronies and the “new” Republican Party is endless. No doubt Barry Goldwater is rolling in his grave at what has been done to his party, its values, its goals and its ideals. A “true” Republican would have fought the selling out of our nation with everything he or she could muster. “New Republicans” now ask, “What’s in it for ME”?

I’ve respected the Republican Party of the past, although I’m a life-long Democrat, but my disgust for Republicans now has no bounds as they have blindly followed a self-serving president and his cabal of profiteers as they turned a blind eye and deaf ear in unfounded belief to a party in which they trusted that excludes all but the richest few at the expense of everyone else.

Unless you can discreetly hand-off a check to a Republican candidate at a $25K per plate fundraising event you’re just another fool believing that you will share in a system that makes the disgustingly wealthy only wealthier at your expense - PERIOD.

The fact that Wally Herger is against the 21st. Century GI Bill, as is the president and their party, is but more proof of what a two-faced chicken hawk he and his have repeatedly proven themselves to be by both their actions and inactions. GWB, Wally Herger and the Republican Party are all cut from the same cloth of hypocrisy.

All of the Republican Party and its mindless lockstep minions proclaim to be both pro-military and pro-veteran when in fact they support the prior but not the latter. A strong military can carry out their will under the guise of the national security hence the unlimited stream of funding for the military (excluding proper and effective armor and personal protective equipment) to serve the administration’s goals. However veterans, particularly disabled ones, have neither value nor purpose and are viewed no differently than the empty brass casings of expended munitions – mere remnants having served their purpose to now be swept away or be left behind as nothing more than litter. Consequently countless veterans are homeless and unemployed because sufficiently funding their needs doesn’t serve the agenda of the administration or its party. On my latter point this is where being “fiscally conservative” is exercised while the countless tax dollars pissed away for no justifiable reason in Iraq is excused behind a façade of “national security”.

Therefore it’s easy for service-evading cowards, such as Wally Herger, to turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to veterans and, in particular, those who are service-disabled. My contempt for Wally Herger and his ilk is boundless.

Jim Webb, a Naval Academy graduate and combat Marine, served with honor and distinction. He authored the 21st Century GI Bill that GWB, Herger and the Republican Party are attempting to quash. What can GWB, Wally Herger, Dick Cheney and the vast majority of the Republican Party say of their service?

Sadly, John McCain, the Republican heir apparent, a Navy captain, aviator and POW who endured years of torture at the “Hanoi Hilton”, having been captured, has abandoned those with whom he served and those following him in service by opposing the 21st Century GI Bill, selling out to his party over those who wear or have worn the uniform of their respective branches.

This is why more and more veterans, Active Duty, Reservists, Guard Members, their survivors and dependant ants are turning their backs on the Republican Party as it has been Democrats who have stood by and supported them.

Calling the Chicken Hawk Coward Wally Herger

I call them as I see them. Further I will continue to publicly denounce Wally Herger for the worthless chicken hawk and coward that he is. I served twenty-two years, am service-disabled and come from a military family - something which Wally Herger cannot proudly proclaim having evaded service as have his offspring.

A chicken hawk is one that supports a war providing he and his are not required to fight that war and, better still, a war from which he and his cronies can profit. During the draft Wally Herger hid in a community college and then got into a BA program from which he promptly dropped when the draft was abolished. Hence Herger is a coward for not serving and a chicken hawk by supporting a war in which he and his will not serve nor endure any loss but, rather, only profit.

Therefore it’s incredibly easy for someone like Wally Herger to publicly proclaim his patriotism and support of those who do serve and have served to only go back to DC to erode and eliminate what benefits there are for those who, by oath, carry out the mission they are given regardless of whose interest that mission may serve. The members of the military have political and financial value until they become veterans, particularly disabled veterans, whereupon they become a burden of which to be disposed promises damned.

Wally Herger is not only a coward and chicken hawk but he is a ne’er-do-well having run from an unfinished education into mommy and daddy’s business because he can do nothing on his own. A ne’er-do-well which, according to Webster means, “an idle, worthless person; a person who is ineffectual, unsuccessful, or completely lacking in merit; good-for-nothing”. There is no better description for Wally Herger. Considering that Herger got into office on family money and remained there by pandering to fear and ignorance while doing nothing to better the lives of his constituents as he dangled from his masters’ strings is evidence that he is worthless. He gladly takes his salary from the public yet refuses to serve the interests those whose taxes from which that salary comes.

Wally Herger is, simply, worthless as he serves only himself and special interests while completely oblivious to his district’s needs.

If the California legislature had not made challenging another to defend his honor unlawful in 1872 I doubt Wally Herger would be in office today. Then again, coward as he has proven himself to be, he would no doubt have a second stand in his place had the law not been chaptered.

There’s no free pass for the oil industry, the Bush Administration or the Republican Party concerning fuel prices. To those who think ever-increasing fuel prices and the economic fallout aren’t the result of W’s Iraqi debacle, consider this:

Military vehicles and armor operate on diesel. They weren’t designed for mileage and there are thousands of them deployed in Iraq operating 24/7/365. The military relies on “organic” supplies meaning that which they bring into the theater and not what’s available in the theater as it can be disrupted or denied by an enemy. Consequently diesel is shipped over to the theater from the US. Diesel, which was less expensive than gas before the war cost more than gas five years into the war due to a shortage created by the idiot-in-chief. Trains and trucks deliver the goods we need daily and increased diesel prices raise the cost of everything.

All military aircraft run on jet-a, a kerosene based fuel. They too suck fuel measured in hundreds of pounds per hour and are constantly flying sorties in theater. Less fuel is now available for commercial aviation which also delivers goods and packages as well as passengers thus also raising prices.

Instability in an oil producing region gives speculating scum (the kindest word I can muster) an excuse to raise oil prices. It was Bush that created that instability by invading Iraq and his oil industry pals are rolling in our money from obscene profiteering. The result is that those fortunate enough to have a job in this crumbling economy can’t afford to commute to work without cutting back in their budgets where-ever possible. Thus money that would benefit other parts of the economy (retailers, restaurants, theaters, etc) is redirected to the pockets of big oil as a benefit for gouging consumers. That money redirected to pay ever increasing fuel prices is why 98,000 more people are unemployed because discretionary spending has all but vaporized.

Someone posted here that we should nationalize oil and I wholeheartedly agree. Big oil is but another example of what happens when big business is allowed to run wild while enabled by an administration and party that it supports through campaign funding with a nod, a nudge and a wink. If this quid pro quo isn’t stopped we will be another third world toilet of a few haves and countless have nots.

John McCain said, "Americans don't hate the rich. They want to be like them". That's how the Republicans operate - by telling the average working chump that if they support Republican policy they too will enjoy great prosperity.

Oh, yeah. That voting Republican thing really worked well, didn't it? Their promise of "you can share in the wealth" with the caveat of "just vote for us and do what we say without question" paid off - for the wealthiest Americans and corporations. The poor working chump fell for the lie more than once and got the shaft as usual.

Wealthy people don't want to share; it's against their nature. Rather they live to gain as much wealth as possible and they really don't care if someone's “grandmother freezes in the dark” (to quote an Enron minion) if they can find a way to take her last cent to throw on their huge pile. Corporations don't care about their worker drones. All they care about is profit at anyone's expense below the standard top three at their helms. Corporations get “attractively profitable" to investors by finding ways to squeeze every cent out of workers. No more living wages, medical insurance, pensions nor anything else that workers once enjoyed. Those who complain can watch as their job is outsourced to some third-world toilet and the company for which they once worked is rewarded for it with a tax break. And, should a CEO run a company into the ground, they are rewarded for it with millions of dollars over and above their salaries of countless millions when they leave.

The only welfare programs that this administration and the Republican Party support are the ones for the wealthy and corporations. If that weren't the case, they wouldn't allow them to run wild for more riches with their "creative" mortgage products that preyed on the American Dream while creating a new generation of homeless or selling out the American worker to cheap labor illegally pouring over the border to which they give a nod, nudge and wink or shipping living-wage jobs overseas to the detriment of the American worker for greater profit and then rewarding such treason with tax incentives.

And let's not forget that little foray into Iraq with no justification under the orders of the draft- evading, drill-missing, idiot-in-chief. All that that has done is make the Blackwaters, Halliburton’s and other countless corporations that are buddy-buddy with the administration richer as it siphons trillions of dollars from programs to help those most in need at home while allowing our infrastructure to crumble and creating a deficit of unimaginable proportions that our kids will have to pay off.

Also keep in mind that the 4,000 American lives lost in, and the new generation of disabled veterans coming home from, “The War on Terror”, from which there was none until we invaded Iraq, are the children of what's left of middle and working class Americans. Of course this little "expedition" paid off without a draft; when the economy is on the skids who needs a draft when the employment picture is so bleak that military service seems the only viable option, especially with fat bonuses for signing up for direct combat specialties? To further bring up the numbers of the ranks of the military to do the bidding of the top 5% with all of the wealth is to destroy the economy for the other 95%, raise the enlistment age, reduce the educational requirements to the third-grade level and open the door for felons and illegal aliens. This assures that only the children of the bottom 95% will do the bidding of the wealthy, connected power-elite so that they or their prodigy will never shed a tear nor a drop of blood.

There's lots of money for Bush’s war but next to nothing for the broken veterans it created. Does anyone remember the shame of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center scandal or the other cold, heartless examples such as abandoned, homeless veterans living under bridges thanks to Republican "compassionate conservatism"?

Every day the ranks of the American “have- nots” grow thanks to this administration and its enablers. Those ranks are turning into an angry mob that will get its revenge come the November elections.

Note to Wally Herger (another draft-evading, chicken hawk, Republican COWARD who sends everyone else's kids to war as his stay behind while he wraps himself in a flag, clutches his Bible and holds his plastic sword on high as he votes against the veterans whom he USED for photo-ops): "Count this angry, service-disabled veteran of twenty-two years from a family with service dating back 100-years (unlike yours) among the vengeful in YOUR district whom are building the machine to remove you and your ilk from office".

WARNING: From Servicemember to Veteran to American Worker, You're "Expendable"

The Washington Post of today printed an article about the highly skilled unemployed that are under-reported if not ignored in the news. After twenty-two years of military service, two degrees, numerous schools and courses as well as a wealth of experience easily translated to the private sector I became self-employed for many of the reasons I’d read in the story and in comments posted to it about not only the dearth of decent, living-wage paying jobs but the mentality of the American employer toward the American worker; once they make a decent wage, attain a certain age or they or an immediate family member have a change in health they become a disposable commodity easily replaced by a younger one, citizen or not, for far less money. Starting with the Reagan Administration the lid was taken off of corporate greed and American employers at all levels were aided and enabled in the slow, painful extinction of the American middleclass worker.

Because of my experiences after the military as a service-disabled veteran I became actively involved in organizations and programs for veterans to assist them in becoming self-sufficient entrepreneurs because the way that this country, its institutions and employers treat them is even more disturbing and reprehensible than how the average American worker is treated. For veterans, particularly service disabled veterans, finding meaningful employment that pays a living wage is far more difficult than for the average worker. Older veterans endure the same prejudices as their younger counterparts plus age discrimination. They all were expendable in the field and now can’t comprehend why they’re now viewed as expendable at home as well. One veteran who had survived an IED in Iraq confided that he wished it had killed him if he’d known how he’d be treated at home.

Given the fact that this country views its workers as disposable razors, cheap and easily replaced, it’s no wonder that its veterans are viewed as already having been disposed of by their government and worth even far less. It’s an attitude beyond contempt and revulsion and it mocks Lincoln’s words at his second inaugural address that this nation”…care for him who shall have borne the battle and his widow and orphan”.

Remember all of this when it comes time to bring a new administration to the Whitehouse and change to congress in November. Study their voting records on bills to support the American worker, the military and veterans (votesmart.org is a good source). See if they’ve introduced bills to protect the average American and not corporations here and abroad. Investigate who funds their campaigns. Both miscreants and saints leave trails of evidence of whom they really are and it’s incumbent upon us to see through their rhetoric and find the real person before casting a vote.

The answer is simple: those who sell us out will be thrown.

A friend from Germany observed that she couldn't discern any difference between a Democrat and a Rebublican noting that both were generally very wealthy, powerful and only sought more power with each only attempting to appeal to the largest block of voters shifting positions like race drivers shifting gears on a track. Well today's capitulation to the administration in the form of a blank war check proved her observation to be dead on.

I've been a Democrat my entire life but the party has really screwed the pooch today as far as I'm concerned; I'm now an independant because my party obviously wanted seats and was willing to lie to get them. None of you seem to get it because you obviously just don't give a tinker's damn about the people who put you in office. Your anti-Iraqi-war platform was as much BS as what stuffs your $1,000 designer suits.

This said, don't email me for donations - in fact drop me from your list. And if you call pandering for money your drone in the phone bank will regret dialing my number. You're all filthy rich - fund your own damned campaigns.

And if you think I'm voting for any two-faced sell-out that rolled over you obviously have a SERIOUS substance abuse problem. Then again you needn't worry about my vote anyway because you sold my district to Wally Herger election after election because we weren't worth the effort in the grand scheme to the party.

To Congressman Wally Herger

Does the name Steven Walberg-Riotto have any meaning to you? I doubt it does. Allow me to refresh your memory, Mr. Congressman. He was an 18-year-old Army PFC from Paradise which is in your district. For purposes of educating you, a PFC, since you never saw the need to bother yourself with military service, is a Private First Class – an E-3 – one of the youngest, lowest ranking soldiers who earns a mere $1,534.20 per month while risking the most and doing the dirtiest work in the Army.

You, sir, neither served in the military nor did you even bother to attend this young man’s funeral let alone even send a representative to give comfort to his family for their loss resulting from a war that you have blindly supported from the very beginning. Your website made no mention of the loss of this young soldier from your district as has it with any other casualties who have preceded PFC Walberg-Riotto. Then again none of your children or grandchildren, as have you, ever served in any branch of the military. It seems that service and sacrifice are for others and the privileged classes to which you believe that you and your prodigy belong are exempt from the obligatory “camouflage collar work” of the masses and their offspring.

These words, in the military known as a “dressing down” and one you well deserve, come from a service-disabled veteran who has served just under twenty-two years and who comes from a family with a long and proud record of military service dating back several generations and has lost family to combat.

You, Mr. Herger, are long on patriotic rhetoric in “support” of the troops and extremely short on action to provide that support in any tangible manner. Your voting record against legislation to improve the pay and quality of life of those serving and the benefits and medical care for those who have served is most telling of what a reasonable person could only conclude to be a poorly veiled contempt for those who bear and have borne our defense. I have personally experienced what in the kindest of terms can be described as your silent indifference to veterans having written to you numerous times. I had proposed a benefit for disabled veterans to recognize their service and sacrifices with negligible costs to the government. The end result would be additional funding for morale, welfare and recreation activities as well as additional revenues for commissary and exchange services by giving these veterans access to these services and thus benefiting the Active, Reserve and Guard components as well as their dependants. Each letter to you, sir, was ignored.

I can only conclude by your failure to be represented at PFC Walberg-Riotto’s funeral, your ignoring my proposal that would provide a benefit for disabled veterans with a return of no less $1000 to every $1 invested annually while benefiting those still serving and their families along with your failure to serve during Vietnam that you, sir, are but a self-serving hypocrite more concerned with quietly maintaining public office and enjoying its benefits with no concern for the welfare of anyone other than yourself, your family and your cronies.

While the best and brightest of this nation are on the other side of the globe risking life and limb in the Iraqi campaign which you have fully supported since the first round was fired you, as evidenced on your website, have concerned yourself with teenagers learning how to commit suicide via the internet. In the name of reason, sir, what of value of the lives of all of the teenagers in the armed forces of this nation that you have voted into death’s gaze?! Are they less worthy of your protection while in service and after their return, should they be fortunate enough to return alive, than one teenager in a million who might pursue the internet in order to end their life?

If teenage suicide is of such grave concern to you should your efforts not then be focused on improving mental health services in this nation?

I digress, but I do so only because to attempt to follow your logic leads one down a pretzel shaped path that only supports the conclusion that you are completely disconnected from your constituency if not real life.

As a Vietnam era vet with nearly twenty-two years of service and coming from a military family with a very long history of service over several generations I’ve grown weary of being ignored by votevets.org and every other organization that apparently only seek contributions and nothing more. Iraqi and Afghani vets aren’t the only ones with grievances to redress and the former commissioned officers who front votevets.org (this being stated by the son of a combat 0-6) aren’t the only ones articulate enough or capable enough to plead the broader case of all veterans.

If I seem angry it is because I am. If I appear insulted let there be no doubt. Votevets.org is but an organization that proclaims to speak for all veterans yet narrows its voice to those who’ve served during the most recent “sandboxes” and ignores the voices of veterans such as myself as evidenced by my multiple communications that have been met without so much as a f**k off. Perhaps a cashier’s check through the postal service with at least three zeroes before the decimal point might receive a response.

This is why we, as veterans, can’t completely bring down the service-evading, flag-draped “Christian” conservatives that have sent us into war for their own self-serving goals. It is because we fragment ourselves believing that one group of us, as veterans, have been violated, abused or more important than another.

A response will prove me right or full of s**t. Well?

Delayed Benefits Frustrate Veterans

Hundreds of Thousands of Disability Claims Pending at VA; Current Wars Likely to Strain System Further

In his last years, World War II veteran Seymour D. Lewis would stand at the door of his home in Savannah, Ga., waiting for a letter that never arrived.
The family of the former Army private, who lost the hearing in his right ear to a grenade explosion in basic training in 1944, spent years wrestling with the federal bureaucracy for his disability benefits, at one point waiting more than a year just to be told to fill out more forms.
In 2001, the Department of Veterans Affairs started sending Lewis a monthly check for $200, an amount he appealed as too little and too late for the lasting physical sacrifice he made for his country, his family said. The appeal was still pending when Lewis died last year at age 80.
"Every time I would call, they would send me a new form to fill out, with exactly the same information that they already had," said his son Frank A. Lewis, 61, a Navy veteran. "They run you around. They keep you dangling. . . . My father was elderly. He would wait at the front door for the mailman, waiting for something from the VA. When he would get a letter, he would anxiously open it, and when it said nothing, the depression he would go into was unreal. I have a feeling they were just waiting for my father to drop dead so they wouldn't have to pay any money. It's been one big nightmare."
Hundreds of thousands of veterans, many approaching the winter of their lives, await VA disability claim decisions that will provide or deny a key source of income. The monthly payments, which range from $115 to $2,471 for individuals, are available to veterans of any age whose disability is "a result of disease or injury incurred or aggravated during active military service," according to the Veterans Benefits Administration.
Nearly 400,000 disability claims were pending as of February, including 135,741 that exceeded VA's 160-day goal for processing them. The department takes six months, on average, to process a claim, and the waiting time for appeals averages nearly two years.
This already strained system may grow more overburdened in years ahead as many of the troops deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan return from those wars, experts say. VA gives veterans from the current conflicts top priority in claims processing.
"The projected number of claims from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will rapidly turn the disability claims problem into a crisis," said Linda J. Bilmes, a Harvard University professor of public policy who has studied the claims process and met with VA Secretary Jim Nicholson last month to discuss ways to improve it. Bilmes, who noted that those officially wounded in combat would be a small percentage of new veterans applying for compensation, estimated the long-term cost of providing them disability benefits at $70 billion to $150 billion.
Presidents, members of Congress and VA leaders have long promised to eliminate the backlog, but still the veterans wait. Some depict a cultural problem at VA -- an attitude of indifference or hostility among claims workers, a lack of appreciation for veterans' service reflected in snubbed phone calls, slow answers and repetitive paperwork. Some even believe the delays are deliberate, a way to keep costs down by deterring new claims or postponing awards until older veterans die.
"Once we can no longer be utilized as a soldier, we are of no use to them," said Michael Foley, 52, a former Navy intelligence specialist who served in Vietnam and Cyprus during the 1970s. "There is an impression of indifference when you are dealing with the VA benefits people. They are going to get a paycheck no matter what."
Foley has trouble sleeping and endures nightmares from things he saw in the service. The Thomasville, N.C., resident said he is in therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder, but VA denied the disability benefits claim that he filed more than 2 1/2 years ago. He has appealed. Foley also wants VA compensation for a heart procedure in 2004 that he says left him in the hospital for 137 days with complications that included a paralyzed right leg.
"A lot of people think all veterans want a handout. That's not it," said Foley, who is unemployed and lives on less than $1,100 a month, including a $240 VA pension. "When I was in the Navy, they asked me to do things. At the time, it was exciting. My grandfather warned me that this was going to come back and bite me . . . one day. And it has. I lost my job, my house and everything else."
Ronald R. Aument, VA deputy undersecretary for benefits, acknowledged that the department needs to do better, but he rejected the idea that the delays and denials are motivated by money concerns.
"It's not as though we're working on commission here," Aument said. "There is very much a shared passion in this organization in trying to do right by veterans. . . . As far as whether or not we treat people rudely, I would certainly hope that's just an exception as opposed to the rule."
The department fields 7 million phone calls about disability claims each year, he said. Forty-eight percent of the workers who handle claims are veterans. In part, the process is slow so that veterans have time to submit documents and other evidence bolstering their cases, Aument said.
The VA load is getting heavier. Disability-related claims rose to 806,000 in 2006 -- a 39 percent increase from the claims filed in 2000. The workforce handling them grew by 36 percent over the same period, to 7,858 employees. VA officials expect 800,000 new claims this year.
Veterans' disabilities are also growing more complex, with increasing claims for PTSD, diabetes (often tied to herbicide exposure in Vietnam) and multiple ailments. As the veteran population grows older, those who suffer from chronic, progressive conditions -- heart, joint and hearing problems, for example -- file repeat claims, which account for more than half of all claims, VA says.
Earl Armstrong, 87, a former Army technician from Ravenna, Ohio, is a repeat filer.
Armstrong drove an armored vehicle and won a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star while serving under Gen. George Patton in France and Germany in 1944. He suffers from PTSD and persistent ringing in his ears, the latter from the machine gun that was mounted a few feet from his head, he said. The problems have worsened, and for three years Armstrong and his wife have tried to persuade VA to raise his disability rating from 50 percent to 100 percent, which would more than triple the couple's $781 monthly compensation to $2,610.
"I am sick of the VA and the way they've been treating us," Armstrong said. "I can't understand it. There's too many [claims], I guess, and they don't have enough people to handle them."
VA handed out $34.5 billion in disability payments to more than 3.5 million veterans and their survivors last year. Aument said VA has increased its claims workforce by more than 580 people in the past year and plans to hire more than 400 additional staff by June. "The cornerstone of our long-term strategy is to develop more processing capacity," he said.
It is too early to predict whether there will be a "huge surge" of claims from Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, Aument said, and claims for severe disabilities such as lost limbs are those VA can process fastest. Still, some older veterans say their younger counterparts are in for a rude awakening when they apply.
Army veteran Raymond L. Goings, 61, served as a military policeman in Vietnam from 1969 to 1971, an experience that left the Las Vegas resident with PTSD, he said. He praised his VA psychiatrists, but not the regional office that denied the disability claim he has pursued for three years.
"Basically they said I was never being shot at, that the things I told them I saw, I didn't see," said Goings, who has appealed. "They wanted dates and times, even though I tried to explain to them that there are a lot of things about combat that I can't remember."
Jerrel Cook of Joplin, Mo., another Army veteran, breathes with the help of an oxygen tank and suffers from asthma, chronic bronchitis, hearing loss, hypertension and thyroid problems. Cook, 62, blames biological and chemical testing in Alaska while he was stationed there in the mid-1960s. VA has denied his five-year-old disability claim.
"They are playing a waiting game," he said. "It's easier to stall out until the veteran dies rather than to pay his claim. . . . This is ongoing practice with the VA, and it's certainly something that needs to be corrected."

OneCrankyDom is partially right. However, there are bogus claims and bureaucracy has to sort them out. There were people who were screwed up before they got into the military or incurred an injury or illness while in the military but not on duty. There is no simple way to separate such claims from the legitimate ones. If this country stops engaging in unneccessary unwinnable wars like Iraq it will not have to worry about being overwhelmed with VA claims.

Earlier this week I received my final denial of my claim for a service connected disability. The main reason is that the VA is responsible for my medical care, as I receive a non-service connected VA disability check each month, and the VA doctors refuse to help me with my caseâ€”they say what ever they want to in order to have me turned down, but when I provided specific info and two witnesses to what happened to me during my military service they refused to acknowledge what I said or contact the witnesses. Until all these stories about other veterans battles for disability claims began to appear in the Wash Post I thought that it was more or less just the way that my case has been mis-handled. Some of the disabilities that I receive my monthly check for are service connected but others are not. I am only after the VA for a fair determination of what happened to me while in the service. I want to pass on the info about non-service connected disability benefitsâ€”if you are a veteran who is 100 percent permanently disabled for life then you can get a check which equals about what a 60 percent service connected disability gets you. So if they turn you down for service connected than you may as well go ahead for the non-service connectedâ€”at least you will have some income coming in. The non-service connected check is also given to very low income vets over 62 or 65, I forget which, but if you are a very low income vet over 62 you should look into it. As a veteran, I am part of this national disgrace. I have NEVER been treated so poorly and unprofessionaly in my entire life. My claim has been in the process now for over 6 years! I had a federal judge rule in my favor, but was later overturned by a GS-12 social worker, during a comp hearing. As of this date, Ive recieved a total amount of comp money of $3.08/ travel pay. Didnt even cover my local bus fare. The local papers here are reporting that it may take as many as 15yrs to resolve these claims, and by then many will have died, ...As I will. David K. I am a retired Air Force veteran who sustained a knee injury during military service. The VA originally awarded a 30 disability to my claim. Over the years my disability has worsened, causing me to be unable to walk. I applied for increased disability benefits and have been waiting since Oct 2006 for VA to review my claim. On Mar 22nd, I underwent total knee replacement surgery since the cartilege in my knee is completely gone. VA knows all this and periodically sends me form letters saying they are still reviewing my claim.

Sometimes a patriot must be ready to defend his country against his government. Most of the decisions, going to war and how veterans are treated are made people who never bothered to serve.

After years of down sizing the VA. Years of VA employees getting away with not doing the job they are paid for. Thinking that they can not be fired from their Gov. jobs. I am not surprised that the VA is not ready to deal with the increase in older Vets and the problems that come with old age. In the last few years they should have been ramping up for the New Vets that are now entering into the VA system. But they have not. Instead they are reallocating funds from the services that we older Vets need. To help deal with the needs of younger Vets. The wait for compensation has now gone from when they get around to it. To wait until we have taken care of the younger Vets. Dont misunderstand me. All Veterans are entitled to be fairly treated in a timely manner. Lets face it. Once we Veterans have done what was needed of us. Our great country wishes that we would just go away. So that they would not have to be reminded of the price of freedom. I have been waiting on the VAs claims process for almost 5 years now. That is after have to wait for 20 years before I could even talk about what it is that had caused my PTSD. Why did I have to wait for 20 years? Because the Special Operation I was on was declared A matter of National Security. In truth what every Vet did and what these brave young men and woman are doing today is a matter of national security. No matter what it is that they do. If we did not server. We as a country would not have any national security.

I am a 57 year old Vietnam Era veteran who served with the USAF in NKP Thailand from 1973 - 74. Ten years ago this October, I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes, even though there is no history of that disease in my family. In 2006, I was diagnosed with neuropathy in my legs, feet, arms, and hands. I filed a claim with the VA in 2003, and have been denied service connected compensation twice, even with the evidence from my doctors. In December 2006, an MRI revealed a brain tumor and a tumor in my pituitary gland. I have been on painkillers for the past two years and I am becoming more and more outraged at the VA system each morning when I wake up in ungodly pain. The US Government used a highly toxic herbicide in Southeast Asia and they continue to lie about it and stonewall the Vietnam vets in the hope that they will all just die off. The notion of a Handout is ridiculous because many of these Vets had careers and were working and making decent livings when all of a sudden out of the blue we all started coming down with these strange debilatating illness, which force many to retire earlier than anticipated. The military knew, years ago that this would happen, but did they have the decency to inform anyone that this would affect us in later life. Not at all. We were released from service and told we were in good condition. The politial appointees in the Veterans Administration and the Social Security Administration are their solely to complicate the process and are doing more harm then good. Like some many veterans, I am about to lose everything that I have worked for, for the last thirty years and I hold the the VA and Social Security directly responsible for these situations. Anything that I have to do to survive in this country will be their responsibility because they have driven me to what I feel is desperation. I have insisted in the strongest of terms to my son and his friends about serving in the military, because as they see in my case, this country will literally murder its own, and then lie about it without batting an eye. It is about time that someone shed light on this issue because as you see the Vets since WWII have been treated like crap. I personally have lost all faith in this Nation to do the right thing and have inform my wife that I do not want a military funeral because I do not want the Flag of the country that murdered me on my coffin. I want to be cremated and have my ashes flushed down the toilet because that is the way this country has treated me and an untold number of vets that have put their lives on the line for this country. Now that we need this country, we are all being treated like S**T!!!. In hindsight, I should have gone to Canada.

This a national disgrace that has been covered up and not addressed by anyone for the past sixty years. The fact that the US Army and the large US chemical companies developed Agent Orange and other derivatives of that herbicide from 1944 until now and that they knew the mix that they used in Southeast Asia and throughout the world, including the US was in some case a thousand times more poisonous that what is used for commercial use because it was cheaper to manufacture is absolutely heinous and nothing short of a serious Crime Against Humanity they should finally be held accountable for. It is true that the conditions at Walter Reed was the Tip of the Iceberg, now because of the stonewalling at the VA, EPA, the Institute of Medicine IOM for so many years is the nasty bottom of that same iceberg. Many vets and their children have been affected and already died from the effects of this herbicide. Thousands are suffering very painful lives because of it and they have no one to blame but their own government. It is one that I am clear ashamed of.

Yes, these Vets want a hand out. They earned and deserve that hand out. Although the VA has always been difficult to deal with, President Bust has not fixed the problem. He has compounded it by increasing the number of veterens in the system. Do not expect your country to remember your service. Do not expect your country to ease the physical burdens placed on you by your service. Looking back to Roman history where men served 25 years then were called back the service shows how callus governments are. Look back the WW1 vets to see how callus the American government has been in the past.

Oops, things like DU do not exist--I almost forgot. The bottom line is that we never needed to be in Iraq and any words to the contrary are bases on lies--I do believe--and if you can not quite grasp the thorns of that word, try deceit and know that God is not mocked by profit making liars and their time has come. The term benefit has been substituted for entitlement. Entitlement was the term was used when I was processed out of Vietnam in 1969, not benefit. There were no strings attached such as income levels, degree of injury, place/time of injury, etc. You were supposedly entitled to medical care regardless of cause/source for the remainder of your life. I have called the VA numerous times to check on medical care - I have been told not to bother: my income was too high, I couldnt document military related problems, I had private medical insurance and on and on. I never made it to the door, much less into the system.

Fortunately, I made it through my time in the Army without incurring either, but I saw others make claims. Sometimes the claims were valid and other times they were just trying to get a handout or trying to get disability for something not connected with anything that happened in the line of duty. Someone has to sort this out, you can’t just agree to every claim.

I filed my claim for medical probelms related to the chemical weapons and drug experiments at Edgewood Arsenal that the Army and CIA and DOD funded and ran from 1955 thru 1975. I was there in June thru August 1974, there are 77 toxic substances in the drinking water, and soil of the base, let alone anything we were exposed to on purpose. The program was stopped in 1975 when it came out publicly that these experiments were in violation of the Nuermberg Codes of 1947. Of the 7120 men used in that 20 year period 2098 are presumed deceased as of FY 2000 when the last data was gathered and 54 of the 4022 survivors are disabled, that makes a 74.43 death and disability rate and the VA will not address the issues, I filed my claim in Dec 2002 and it is still on appeal. I have written Senators Graham, Demint, Congressman Joe Wilson and many other elected officials on the VA committes of the house and Senate VA committees, after more than three decades these veterans used and abused in this program deserve the benefit of the doubt, due to the amount of possible toxins they were exposed to. Yet, no one will make the VA help these men or their widows and children, why?

the 54 should be 54 about 2200 men are disabled the report from the IOM failed to mention how the men became disabled not did it mention how the 2098 men passed away, these are men that would have been aged 45-65 in FY2000. The SSA says 3 out of 10 men will become diabled by age 65, it doesnt say anything about 7.5 becoming dead or disabled by age 65 Common sense says there is a link here

As a veteran of El Salvador, I can attest to the endless cycle of repeat requests for aid...it was 15 years before my service there was even acknowledged and by that time I had sworn an oath never to step through the doors of the VA unless it was to visit someone else. I was treated as though I was taking up their precious time with my requests and more than once I left in tears...crying like a little girl. I now seek private therapy for PTSD and most of my support comes from interaction with veterans organizations and a loving third wife. I volunteer at Stand Down every year...knowing that there, but for the grace of a higher power, go I By the way, the statistics are as follows: between 27 and 38 of homeless in this country are veterans - 50 - 60 of the MALE homeless population are veterans with undiagnosed or untreated PTSD, mental illness or related substance abuse issues. These statistics vary about 2 - 3 depending on source but come from come from National Coalition for the Homeless, National Alliance for the Mentally Ill NAMI, and the Urban Institute, along with field studies by several veterans groups including the VFW, DAV and Vietnam Veterans of America. and JHUER, you are right...we are expendable assets. A dead veteran costs nothing to maintain. Veterans are the final casualty in every war reason...enough to end war forever. Veterans who do their duty should be afforded all benefits promised in a timely manner. The so-called backlog is just a symptom of a greater problem which is a Veterans Administration which is out of touch with those they are supposed to serve and a government who would sooner see a veteran just die or otherwise go away than collect what is rightfully theirs. It pains me to see that while so much as changed since the Viet Nam era so much remains the same. Those who serve in the military deserve at least as much as the illegal aliens we are so predisposed to helping. We are too concerned with the rights of the criminal and should concentrate more on the rights of the hero.

I believe everything these vets are saying.The VA does purposely ignore information.If I had time I could tell you horror stories.I spent 4 months in a VA in 1989.Was told I would not be able to work again.I was discharged with a 50 percent disability from the military and worked clear up to 1989.When I was discharge from the VA hospital,I had applied for benefits.It took 7 years of having doctors reports from their own staff being ignored.In many cases they turn down appeals based on answers they gave to completely different statements the doctors had made or questions I had asked causing me to have to wait another 90 to 180 days to try and get a proper decision.They had to do that on purpose,noone could possibly be that stupid.Once the DAV had misplaced my file for an entire year.When I complained about it I was told by the worker that if I didnt like the way they handled my case,I could go somewhere else,which I did. I lost my home,my cars,my boat and everything I had worked for ,for twenty years,and finally my family.By the time they reimbursed me for the 4 months I had spent in the hospital.It was too late.I had lost $170,000 in equity of my property.When I complained of the way the VA had handled my case to the main office in Washington D.C.They wrote back and gave me the disability but said what the local office did was harmless error.Maybe to them it was harmless to me it was devestating.This only scratches the surface.Every vet can tell stories like this.And for the record,I served with the 3rd Marine Division with a Recon unit and I was not a rear-echelon Marine.I left Vietnam with 4 pieces of metal in me and a trashed leg,and after the seige of KheSanh,a nervous system that would never be the same.Theyre so backed up in my opinion because they keep so many vets tied up with appeals because of intentional turndowns,vets that should never be turned down,if they would just bother to read their own doctors reports on the men.The Veterans affairs is the enemy.They dont give any veteran the benefit of the doubt when all evidence is equal,like their federal VA guidelines say.They just deny guys and to hell with regulations.Every Veteran in the system knows these things are true.If they would admit the problem,they could fix it.But how do you fix a problem that no one will admit to? There a lot of good honest hard working people at the VA.But there are also a lot of lazy-ass dont give a damn about anyone or anything except their own jobs which they have the normal attitude of a lot of government workers.They know it takes almost an act of congress to fire a government worker,so they dont care how rotten a job they are doing.A lot of employees actually resent the veterans.It needs to be fixed.But likely,it wont happen.The top heavy admin wont admit the problem.We had one supervisor hired at the VA here that came down from the VA in Cleveland Ohio to avoid sexual harassment charges.That came from the Saint Petersburg Times,on an article about the Bay Pines V.A. in Bay Pines,Florida.The first thing this guy did was remodel his office,as tight as the V.A. budget is,to the tune of $125,000.00 including $17,000.00 for a damn Fish tank.These problems continue today and go on and on.Thanks for reading this.Dont believe any of these lying ass Government V.A. effreydennis - I must take issue with your observations regarding WWII era vets. Here in Minnesota, we have 2 medical centers with Adult ay Health Care Centers that are overwhelmed with reqests for admittance. The one I have been in since 1994 [yes I am an octegenarian] has a very dedicated staff which is overburdened, It has 5 persons caring for a census of over 70 vets. The same number of staff they had when the program started with 15 vets.This year our facility has not yet been notified of the funds they were to be allocated. If you must blame someone, blame the Congressmen who lade the appropriation allocations with their pet pork projects and if signed into law brag to their constituents how much they have helped them and the veterans

Does the American public realize that a VA disability rating of 30 pays the injured veteran $389 a month? A 100 rating earns $2280 a month. Thirty percent of $2280 is $684. I would appreciate someone explaining the rationale for the VAs arithmetic in shortchanging veterans in this manner. It should be noted that if a soldier loses a forearm and gets an 80 disability determination the veteran gets somewhere around $700 to $1,000 a month in benefits. captstan

Further more the MBA Presidency with all the incompetency has managed to hang a over $4 trillion federal deficit around the nations neck since the dubious Presidency. Along with another over $13 trillion national assests hocked to the foreigners like the Chinese, Arabs, Japanese and others. At home our natural resources in particular oil is at the lowest ebb, while the Commander in Chief files around in that 747 at the cost of over $10,000 per hour just of aviation fuel.

Instead, when this country called I answer and now when I was looking forward to a rewarding retirement I am about to lose everything. At age 57 there is no starting over. At this point I have only anger towards both the VA and the Social Security Administration because they both seem to be working out of the same playbook. The sad truth is that every dollar not firmly nailed down has been diverted to the Iraq War. This effects the VA, Walter Reed, needed benefits, no programs, the list is endless. This is in addition to the billions passed by the Congress. The rank and file folks at the VA sincerely want to help more but they are limitted by inadequate resources$.This sad state will continue until we leave Iraq and stop the bleeding in dollars and lives.

To jeffreydennis and others who state that VA employees bear responsibility for the delays, etc. Please realize these are normal good folks that, by and large, want to help the vet as much as humanly possible. The root problem is lack of resources $. Even the relatively small funds provided to VA are further reduced when the administration cuts the budget to support the Iraq War. Now that the media has moved on to other matters, does anyone want to bet that the improvements to WR and VA facilities will take place as advertised? One thing I cannot understand. The problems within the VA system and its principal cause above are well known to the average person. Yet when Bush/Cheney want a safe audience to make a speech tooting the Iraq War, they pick venues like the VFW, American Legion, other veteran organizations and military installations. I understand respecting the Present and Vice Present positions but could not the organizations just express their displeasure beforehand?

As a retired Federal Employee, I would never blame the rank in file for this fiasco. They work very hard to try to make the system work properly in spite of which Administration is in power. Unfortunately, it is the higher ups in the management system who are trying to impress the politicos and the political appointees who come in an agency which an agenda which in most cases that I have observed have been contrary to what the agencies goals actually are. The rank in file are constantly trying to work within the mandates of each new administration. They are some of the hardest working individuals that I have ever known. As a former supervisor, there were many supervisors who I was familiar with that should not be in government service who treated their section as their own little feifdom. They were unwilling to take anyone elses opinion into consideration which eventually led to their downfall. For the most part, it is the rank in file Federal employee that keeps it from completely falling apart. It has been my experience that under most Republican Administrations their motto should be If it aint broke, break it.

Auments flip comment regarding working on commission is typical of the attitude in VAs leaderhsip that perpetuates the inattention veterans receive at the hands of the clerks and case workers who administer the claims system. Perhaps if Auments workforce received performance-based pay, and the most important element of the performance was customer satisfaction, attitudes at the worker-bee level would change in a heartbeat. Its interesting that an administration headed by an alleged MBA would ignore the most fundamental aspect of customer service in its operations. Auments attitude is simultaneously unbusinesslike and shameful. Shame on the Post and Christopher Lee for using the imagery of a handout in connection with the VAs administration of veterans disability payments. The VA administers, disburses, or simply pays out benefits to those who have earned them in the service of the nation--it doesnt hand anything out. Its ironic that the Post would let such a sloppy characterization slip through such editorial process as might exist, when the point of Lees article is that vets have a hard time getting anything out of the VA. The irony calls into question whether Lee and the Post understand what theyre publishing. They certainly seem incapable of empathy.

This is exactly what happened to my dad, a WWI veteran. He had applied for a small pension to help with end-of-life medical help and the VA delayed and delayed getting it to him even though it was obvious to all that he qualified and like there were a lot of WWI veterans making claims in 1984. Thankfully, he had a young son me and a very good county VA person advocating for him as he was very feeble at the time. Between us we spent three years badgering the VA until they came thru. Six months later, my dad passed away at age 87. Remember the Rule of Bureaucracy not just the VA: *We exist to serve ourselves before we serve those for whom we were created.*

For those veterans who are having a tough time filing claims and keeping up with the bureacracy that is the VA, you need to get in touch with a representative of any one of the veterans organizations, that will, hopefully, act as an effective advocate for you while you pursue your claims. Of course, there are the better know orgs, such as the American Legion, but lesser known ones will sometimes put up a better fight, and these include the Disabled American Veterans, Paralyzed Veterans of America and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

O! so true, I have had an on going saga with the VA since 1963.At the time of my release when I was returned from the Far East I was told my disability was 60 but i would have to extend my ETS to be able to get them or I could accept the discharge and then apply when I got to my home.foolish me I wanted to go home so I agree as 6 months to a year was a long time.To this day I receive a 20 rating, which I started receiving in 1998.I have been trying to get it corrected as I wish to have the full 60 here at Waco,Texas and they told me it would be at least 2 years before they can get it completed this happened about 30 months ago and it is still 2 years. As far as whether or not we treat people rudely, I would certainly hope thats just an exception as opposed to the rule. Mr Aument, rather than HOPE get off your duff and consult a few vets. I would suggest that perhaps some folks need to do the math... a 100 percent sevice-connected disabled vet receiving the max benefit receives 2900 dollars a month.....3200 or so a year. It saddens me to read the comments posted by my fellow vets, it is all true to me having experienced much the same treatment by the VA. I am aging and I worry about my health care and what I will do, god knows I cant trust the VA Hospital to provide proper care. It took me 7 years and 4 Congressmen to get the benefits I have and then was paid for less than 6 months back pay. Now I am concerned that raising hell will cause vindictiveness against me. WaPo Editors: I feel obligated to add my comment to those who are lamenting the cavalier attitude of the Veterans Administration toward their unfortunate legal charges especially those from WW-II, the last GOOD war, Viet Nam, Korea, etc. I am an 88-year-old disabled veteran of WW-II. I got mine in a swamp on Bougainville Island, a few weeks after we had invaded it. I was in said swamp when a Jap 88mm shell was lobbed into my position. I threw myself down into the water and swamp mud and had the right side of my head submerged when the shell went off. The concussion blew out the tympani in my right ear and damaged tissue envelope that covers my bain. These injuries left me with migraine headaches, equilibrium problems and serious hearing loss that have lasted off and on until today. I was first evacuated to Navy MOB-8 hospital on Guadalcanal, then to the Base hospital on Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides, and then to Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in California. There they decided I was incurable and transfered me to the Sun Valley Separation Center in Idaho. They kept me a few months, looked me over, declared me 50 disabled and gave me a medical discharge. Some twenty years ago that 50 disability rating was summarily reduced to 10. I now get $115 a month in disability payments. I desperately tried to get into V.A. domiciliary care in the United States, but the VA did not even answer my letters. I am now living in Mexico, because I cant afford to live in the land of my birth. My VA disability payment plus my Social Security check add up to about US$900.00 a month. You cant live on that in the Land of the Free. I married a Mexican lady who has Mexican Social Security. She added my name to her S.S. account, so now I get free medical care and medicines courtesy of Mexico and we get by. So much for the concern of the great YewEssoFAY for its war heroes. expletive deleted If American kids of military service age understood what their future likely holds, if the are unlucky enought to be just wounded and not killed, the Defense Department would have to send out kidnapping squads to keep the armed forces up to functional strength. I have had five strokes in the past year and have a life-expectancy of about 15-minutes - so these comments are not for me, but for those who will follow me. They deserve better than they will likely get. Call it politics. My advice to the pentagon, the congress and the White House: Quit talking about patriotic obligation and start talking about quid-pro-quo. Military service is a thankless task for the wounded and service families especially. The overstuffed public servants who have created this disgrace should be, themselves, put in uniforms and sent to become heroes if they think so highly of the calling. L. Having read though the letters posted here. There is a wide range of opinion. Using an old addagethe pen is mighter than the sword. Veterans do have an option. With over twenty million veterans available to voice their concerns shows a strong influence could be voiced when it comes to veterans care. Just a few million emails and letters to this countries leadership could bring about change. The website firstgov.gov supplies both addresses and email addresses to voice ones opinion. I have voiced my dissatisfaction with the Department of Veterans Affairs this way for some time now. If nothing else its good for a persons moral. AND JUST MAYBE things will get better for veterans if not for myself.

I am a veteran who filed a claim back in 1992 for several documented service connected disabilities , one of which was denied though I provided a copy of my own military medical records, I was eventually forced to drop that claim after I appealed the decision, which then was upgraded and I appealed again, on my second appeal I had to wait 11 years. During that time I missed out on a lot of other benefits that I was entitled to because you could not file a new claim until the original appeal had been cleared. I fully believe the VA does try to wait it out hoping that you will give up once you receive any kind of compensation, which I had to do in one claim and I was not very happy about it but they had me over a barrel. I even asked my Congressman for help and they gave him the run around. Its a waiting game that just not funny anymore, we served our country voluntarily and we deserve better.

I am a civilian that is on SSI. It took about 4 years to get it. Two applications and then a lawyer. The paperwork on my side is over 2 inches thick. The lawyer sent it to me. He got about a third of the settlement and the only thing he did was get the doctors to write the letters. I couldnt get them to write them without paying in advance, which after a year of unemployeement, I didnt have. You see, to apply for SSI you cant be able to work for a year. I did get some food stamps and my mother put me up for those years. After you finally begin to get the pittence they allow you, you have to wait another year plus for your Medicare card. I feel for the vets but the civilians that are disabled have the same if not more problems. Our disablitiy payments arent based on percentage of disability, its based on what our income was before our disability. Im glad I had a high paying job and get enough to live on, somewhat. I served, I was a nurse, not in the armed forces but civilian and that is just as hard.

When I was processing a claim in VARO Waco, I got the impression that anything awarded to me was going to come out of the pocket of the employees there. Good strong Christians they were, conservatives, to the last drop. After moving and transferring my records to a different VARO, was awarded 100 percent within 6 mos. Woe behold those who live in a certain VARO, such differences just shouldnt be. Several years ago, one of the newspaper chains did a special report on the differences between different VAROs, Eye opener to say the least.

Christopher Lees well written article missed one problem, especially concerning VA PTSD claims. I have had PTSD since 1966 Viet Nam-combat related and have difficulty getting qualified therapy that is not coerced by the VA adjudication board to give me a rating lower than other therapists not being paid by the VA gave me. The result is a lower level of therapy usually some meaningless test and a delay in claim completion which does result in the government paying less than the laws require. This must come from the top echelon of the government! We Vets would risk our lives for our fellow warriors, but then the pencil pushers accuse us of stabbing each other in the back. I feel sorry for these veterans who are being denied the benefits to which they are entitled. The main problem is that the government keeps putting off and creating problems for conditions that are justified and backed up by sufficient documentation to prove the disability. All the VA is doing is trying to save money by denying benefits and hoping that the veteran will go ahead and die where they do not have to pay any compensation. It is the usual, government run-a-round for which it is famous as I know from experience though it was not the VA. If the government can keep from paying compensation then they save money and there is more for them to waste. What every veteran needs to do to put pressure on the VA and other government agencies is to write their Senator who has the means to do something. And with the number of veterans who are coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan with various aliments caused by their exposure to various causes of PTSD, IEDs, etc. then they should be compensated as high as possible. Someone needs to put an IED under the chairs of the ones doing the denying and then they just might learn what it is to be tramatized.

To quote the article, “Simonyi, a 58-year-old native of Hungary, paid $25 million for the 13-day trip” into space. Whom and what was served by that $25m? In answer to that question only Simonyi’s tremendous ego and the need of the press for more “celebrity news” to increase circulation, both real and digital.

To be blunt, that $25m could start a new business and create jobs employing people in the US, the nation to which he fled to escape communism. Instead he chose to only build a personal fortune to an obscene level so that he might go into space and then utilize the “news” in the hope of achieving immortality in some documented record that will not only serve no greater good but will be ultimately be erased by some other arrogant, self-centered billionaire and then the next and the next each trying to outdo the other.

Did Mr. Simonyi serve in the military of the country to which he fled for a better life to earn his place? Did he make any sacrifices for the betterment of others less fortunate? Did he do anything that could even be remotely viewed as selfless so that the lot of others in his adopted country, struggling for a better life, might improve? The answer is, “No”.

I’m not a socialist, communist nor am I one of a legion of mindless American consumers of the spoonfed crap doled out by the media; I am a twenty-one year service-disabled veteran from a military family who knows what it is to sacrifice in order to protect and preserve what we enjoy by having earned it. Therefore this “story” has no more value than the the wasted column space and airtime given Britney Spears, Perris Hilton, American Idol or any other mindnumbing “news”.

Mr. Simonyi is but a flash in a news cycle. The members of the armed forces of this country and the indignities they have have suffered in that service and after are, too, and sadly, but a blink in a news cycle. The difference, however, is that Mr. Simonyi will still be wealthy and whole. And while Mr. Simonyi is vacationing on some Greek island those at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and other military and VA hospitals will be still be struggling to adjust physically and mentaly to survive and adapt to only then struggle further to find gainful employment in civilian life.

This is why I find Mr. Simonyi’s having spent $25m on self-gandulation to go into space for the benefit of his own ego so inexcuseableably obscene when that money could have been utilized for rehabilitation, education and other programs as well as jobs in thanks to those who take the oath and spill their blood so that he and other “celebrities” can live so well.

As a lifelong Democrat I am disgusted and disheartened by the fact that “our” party publicly claims to support the military and veterans while ignoring our individual voices. Diane Feinstein's staff, by their generic non-response that failed to address the specific issues about which I'd written, proved to be as much insincere lip-service as I receive from Wally Herger (R-CA2) in whose district it is my great and horrid misfortune to reside.

I’m tired of writing to those who “represent” me/us to only be ignored or receive a form letter that responds with “Oranges” when the question I had posed was “What is 2 plus 2?”

We, the military and veterans, are not talking points. We are not political ammunition. We are not inanimate objects like the Lincoln Memorial to gather about for a photo-op. And we are not all blind, deaf fools who fall for insincere speeches and promises made by those wrapped in flags yet have given nothing to this country. We are human beings, citizens of this nation, who volunteered to serve in the military to then only become non-entities. We have been abused by this administration, its party, and the military in which we served as well as by the VA which is charged with caring for us after we have been expended, injured, wounded and/or maimed in service. Those who patronize us only further alienate themselves from us and erode our support.

I have lost all faith in the Democratic Party because I can only believe, based on personal experiences, that the party is as void of compassion and as insincere as the Republicans who expend and then abandon those who serve.

If this email is met with the same indifference as demonstrated by the previous silence I’ve experienced then I will know without a doubt that we, as veterans, are nothing but pawns for political purposes to only be later dismissed when, as in our service, we have served our purpose and are of no further value regardless our personal costs.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! HOW DARE THEY TREAT VETERANS THIS WAY!

No cracking wise here with this post. My disgust meter exploded and there is no room for humor as I write this.

I've taken a brief vacation from this blog because it seems all that anyone cares about is which celebrity died or entered rehab. But the ultimate shame of this administration and its party as evidenced by the revelations from Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) has pushed my big red button as it should that of every decent, average Joe and Jane American.

Former representative Joe Scarborough stated on the "Scarborough Country" edition of 5 March 2007 that, in effect, the revelations coming from WRAMC also hurt readiness as "younger brothers won’t enlist having seen the mistreatment of their big brothers". He couldn’t have been more correct. That observation applies as much to generations as siblings.

As the son of a career Air Force colonel who served in WWII and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal twice, the nephew of a combat Marine in the Pacific Island Hopping Campaign, the nephew of a Naval Aviator in the Pacific who was killed in combat, the brother of a Vietnam vet who served during the Tet Offensive and ended up killing himself because of his war demons and as a Vietnam era vet myself who eventually was medically separated in May of 2002, military service has ended with me. I have advised my sons not to serve.

Why? Because I have seen this country make promises to those who serve with its collective fingers crossed behind its back. The VA motto quotes Abraham Lincoln’s second inaugural address, “to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan” yet that hasn’t really been the case since WWII.

This administration and its party are the most anti-veteran group of miscreants and hypocrites of all time, creating a whole new generation of disabled veterans for whom they can’t, or more accurately refuse to, care. They can’t provide promised benefits yet they can find $5-billion-plus each month to pour into the Iraqi debacle.

Yet these people who have never served a day in the military or were part of the “gentlemen’s flying club” (meaning those who never flew anything but training flights) never fail to appear before the cameras with our GIs and vets for every photo op available, making speeches publicly declaring their support for the troops and vets as they quietly and secretly erode what little benefits given our troops and vets at every opportunity.

Don’t let them put the blame entirely on the Army Medical Corps and WRAMC. As casualties continued to mount the Bush Administration compelled the Army to award a contract to IAP Worldwide Services for base operations support services and facilities management. That latter part, facilities management, incidentally, means the maintenance and upkeep of every structure on the base. Is this becoming clear now? Further IAP is run by a former Halliburton executive and the company’s inability to even deliver ice to Katrina put its abilities in question.

A full year passed from the time IAP was awarded the contract to the time IAP took over. In the interim some three hundred Soldiers and Department of the Army (DA) Civilians began to retire, transfer or simply leave as their positions would no longer exist. When IAP accepted the keys there were only sixty Soldiers and DA Civilians on staff. How did IAW respond? It replaced those sixty with fifty of its own (not only can't they deliver ice their math skills are sadly lacking) . The Army warned that this contract that was jammed down its throat could result in "total mission failure" - they were right - it did.

The appalling conditions at WRAMC are in great part due to that fat contract with no discernable performance requirement and a lack of post-care personnel, services and coordination. The conditions at WRAMC have pulled down the curtain that has concealed the true contempt that this administration and its mindless lock-step rank and file have for the military and its veterans.

The testimony before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform by wounded soldiers and their families was absolutely heartbreaking. And despite this administration and its party's claims to be supportive of those who have and do serve the testimony proved it to be nothing more than lip-service. And how can they claim they were "unaware" as there is mounting evidence that there was prior knowledge of what was going on almost literally in their own backyard? Villagers living near the concentration camps during WWII claimed ignorance of went went on beyond the gates too but no-one bought it.

This country only need look at history to see how the military is really viewed by conservatives– an expendable item like munitions. The troop is the bullet that once expended leaves the empty shell that is the veteran.

One ugly moment in our not so distant history that the government has pretty well kept out of the text books are the Bonus Marchers of WWI. During the Great Depression homeless, jobless veterans, many with families, turned to the government in peaceful protest for promised benefits for which they would qualify long after the government actuaries banked they’d be dead (a typical caveat to a benefit for veterans - they won't live to collect or won't collect for long).

One side of the house voted to pay the benefit, the other to withhold it until 1945 and shortly after Herbert Hoover turned the Army under the command of Douglas MacArthur (yes, THAT MacArthur) on the veterans in the streets of DC .

Why? As the Hoover Administration spun it, they were obviously “influenced” by communists as “whites and coloreds camped together” thus they were a threat to the federal government as subversives, a "red threat" to be crushed.

They were nothing but hungry, unemployed veterans whom the government sought to silence and deny promised benefits – and it did until FDR’s administration.

As always history repeats itself. After the GI Bill of WWII was stripped and watered down following Vietnam, veterans once again became an expendable commodity and a way to whittle a budget while pork barrel spending continued unfettered.

Budgets are balanced on the backs of the most vulnerable and veterans, particularly disabled veterans, are among the vulnerable. Promises made for their service and sacrifices vaporize when it’s time to pay the bill as the fat contracts of the Halliburtons, IAPs, et al are funded by stealing from promises to veterans and others. This why military service in my family ends with me until there is drastic change in this government’s attitude toward and treatment of its military and veterans.

Let the children of this administration, its party and those who profit from Iraq do the dirty work for their parents.

I wonder what the hell the majority of voters were thinking these past twelve years. After all, it took a majority to place the current crop of miscreants in office initially and a majority has kept them in there these many, painful years.

Presently there are twenty representatives that CREW, a non-partisan organization, has named as the most corrupt. Seventeen are Republicans, three are Democrats. Of the five that received dishonorable mention (AKA: ones to watch) four are Republicans. Reps. Ney and Cunningham, both Republicans, have accepted plea deals in the Abramoff scandal. Rep. DeLay, also a Republican and the former majority leader, was indicted in Texas and in all probability will face federal indictment. Reps. Jefferson and Mollohan, both Democrats, are now being investigated by the feds along with Republican Sens. Burns and Frist, both Republicans.

Now shades of Peter Graves pedophilic character Captain Oveur from the movie Airplane! Rep. Foley, another Republican, has resigned in disgrace for sending emails best described as creepy and sexually explicit IMs to a former male, teenage page who worked for another Republican. Now the FBI will be investigating Foley as the Republicans are scrambling to hide their complicity for having known for at least a year of Foley's behavior – perhaps as long as five years. The irony is the fact that the federal law for which he’ll be investigated for violating is the very one he actively helped to put on the books.

Granted, there are a few Democrats on the lists; but it’s Republicans who make up the vast majority of the disgraced, indicted and scrutinized. This is the same party that claims to stand high upon the mountain of virtue, swords of righteousness held on high, wrapped in the flag and clutching a bible. They are anything but the image they present and they count on non-issues to cloud the real ones when it hits the fan, using emotion and fear to gain and hold power.

Once the Republican Party or any of its ranks are under the microscope they divert attention to things that hit a raw, emotional nerve with voters short on attention and even shorter on cerebral abilities. Flag burning, gay marriage, violent videogames and terrorism where there is none are just a few examples of how they divert attention. We’ll know when they’re in it really deep when they introduce a bill to ban the recognition of gay marriages performed by flag-burning, radical Muslim clerics who sell violent videogames in the newly added terrorist state of Luxemburg.

But it’s not just Congress and the Senate. The Whitehouse having been back-doored under the FOIA revealed that Jack Abramoff organization (read: criminal enterprise) has had something like five-hundred contacts while Whitehouse staffers only claimed but a few. How can we not believe them? After all, their claims that Iraq was a hotbed haven and winter resort for terrorists while stockpiling massive WMDs has been well document – NOT!

What this all boils down to is that the RICO statutes are being violated daily by the crowd in power in Washington. There is little difference between the Washington of today and the Chicago of the 1920s. Wave a lot of cash around and officials will look the other way, push a bill through or give out a contract. Reelecting these miscreants to federal office today is like giving a fat kid the keys to a Baskin Robins a second time after he'd eaten everything in sight.

The vast majority of voters have to be mentally vacuous to believe that the Republicans in DC represent their concerns and interests as they are oblivious to the overwhelming evidence of Republican corruption and hypocrisy because they continue to reelect them regardless. These guys only care about lining their pockets and those that do the lining. As the average John and Jane Taxpayer are eating reheated meatloaf while watching anything but the news on TV their representatives are eating steak and lobster at their $2,500 a plate fundraisers while taking envelopes under the table.

One definition of insanity is “to repeat the same behavior expecting a different outcome”. Keep that in mind when you vote this November.

Calling all working stiffs

Since the Department of Commerce starting keeping track in 1947, wages and salaries as a share of the gross domestic product are at the lowest point. Wages as a slice of GDP were comfortably above 50 percent from the 1950s through the mid-1970s and then the percentage fell until the mid-1990s when it crept back up through 2000. Now, at a record low, take home pay now makes up just 45.3 percent of GDP.

Since 2003, adjusting for inflation, hourly wages have fallen 2 percent. Conversely, corporate profits, thanks to worker productivity, have swelled. The American worker, however, obviously isn’t sharing in the fruits of their labors.

According to economists Thomas Piketty and Emmanuel Saez, the top 10 percent of earners in 2004 enjoy 42.9 percent of all earnings, not including capital gains. The top 1 percent enjoys up 16.2 percent of the total income.

Worse still, the buying power of minimum wage, adjusted for inflation, is less than it was in 1947. Although California has recently raised the minimum wage, Congressional Republicans are loathe to do the same. The argument offered is that a raise in the minimum wage would benefit but a few at the expense of business and the overall economy.

Interesting argument in light of the fact that low wage earners are the bulk of the workforce as mid and upper wage jobs are disappearing at an alarming rate. This is the same Republican Congress that is giving large tax breaks to companies that send jobs overseas forcing middle workers to take lower paying positions or simply be unemployed. The argument against hurting the overall economy rings hollow and it seems that corporations and the top ten percent are what are really being protected at the expense of the American worker while giving corporations windfall tax breaks.

There is something very wrong with the priorities of the Republicans who dominate Congress and the Senate. If there isn’t a change in leadership and direction in DC in the November elections, the service industry will be this country’s only industry.

Anyone who argues that the administration and its party have nothing to do with the economy is seriously out of touch with reality or is in the top ten-percent that gets forty-two percent of the wealth. Economic manipulation is part and parcel of politics and this administration and the Republican Party are actively engaged in the practice.

Note how fuel prices are plunging so close to the upcoming elections and the president just happens to be from an oil family, not to mention he’s very buddy-buddy with the Saudis. When fuel prices were reaching altitudes never seen before the Republicans blamed market influences. No doubt they’ll try to take credit for fuel prices going down.

Lower energy costs also reign in inflation so the Federal Reserve Board, independent from politics, has been sitting on current interest rates. This is all good for business and most consumers – for now. After November if energy costs began their upward spiral, which no doubt they will, rest assured we’ll see the Fed edging the rates up again.

As voters told Senior, “It’s the economy, stupid”. Junior not only has the economy against him but foreign and domestic policy failures as well.

Calling All Armchair- Warrior Republicans!

Numerous stories have emerged in the media about how Republicans have all but abandoned American Veterans. Those supportive of the Republican Party dismiss those reports as coming from a biased media. Voting records however are fact and fact supports the stories.

All one need do is go to Project Vote Smart and look at the voting records of Congressional Republicans on legislation supported by the DAV (http://www.vote-smart.org/issue_rating_detail.php?sig_id=004044M) to see that the Republican rhetoric of supporting the military and veterans is pure hypocrisy. Not only are the Republican Congressional voting records telling of their contempt for veterans, they also show a disturbing trend since the Republicans gained the White House.

After 2001, when the Bush Administration was firmly seated, what little support Republicans gave legislation benefiting veterans, especially disabled veterans, vaporized. This would lead one to conclude that the administration is anti-veteran and that the Republicans in both houses are in lock step with the Bush Administration.

These armchair-warrior Republicans and their families have failed to make any sacrifices for this country through military service. But they are damned quick to send those who serve into harm’s way for their own personal agendas and the benefit of their cronies who fund their campaign coffers in thanks for fat federal contracts.

These people who have never served a day appear before the cameras with our GIs and vets for every photo op available, making their speeches publicly declaring their support for the troops and vets only to return to DC where they quietly erode what little benefits given our troops and vets at every turn.

As a twenty-one year veteran I find the hypocrisy evidenced by the actions of the Republican Party with regard to the military and veterans repugnant.

As they put those willing to serve in harms way, they throw $5-billion each month into the Iraqi debacle without a single smoking-gun to justify the military action and no end in sight. Afghanistan was justifiable as we could trace the source of the attacks. The evidence was clear and compelling. Iraq, however, has yet to be justified as hard as the administration and its lock-step legions have tried.

Worse the war in Iraq is funded in large part at the expense of domestic programs and by stripping veterans and the military of benefits by slashing the budgets for VA programs or creating new caveats to receive them or denying them outright. But taking away isn’t sufficient enough; they have to block every piece of legislation that might provide any benefit, no matter how small, to veterans as well as their widows and orphans.

Meanwhile those who voted in the current administration spend a $1.95 on yellow ribbons urging us to “Support Our Troops”. If any of these people really want to support the troops they’d spend that $1.95 on postage to their representatives in support of legislation to benefit the troops and veterans while calling Republicans to task to develop a solid exit strategy then hold their feet to the fire to do so.

Now we’re “damned if we do and damned if we don’t”. If we cut and run we lose face before the world, never to be taken seriously for decades, and Iraq falls like Viet Nam. If we “stay the course” until we think Iraq can succeed on its own, the Iraqi government (which we put in place) will probably collapse from infighting or be overthrown by an opportunistic religious faction. Then we’ll be faced with a real threat where none existed before.

Calling all Members of Congress and the Senate!

First, let me congratulate you for having a “constituent services” office which provides no services despite its warm, fuzzy and misleading name. That’s the type of “representation” we’ve come to expect as it appears your staff can’t seem to be bothered as evidenced by the form letter I received. And kudos for crafting a sufficiently generic letter to be non-responsive to a broad range of unrelated topics while giving the illusion of concern. I would assume these are printed in bulk with your signatures.

Again, foolishly, I will attempt to reach you through this forum. Should these words not fall under your eyes, I sincerely hope that it publicly shames you, although there has yet to be any evidence to support that any of you can be shamed. In support of my position that you are indeed shameless, I offer this:

Each of you takes every opportunity to proclaim your support of our troops and veterans as well as your heartfelt concern for matters that affect them. Yet should one of them, a disabled veteran in my case, write to you, the “response” is via the aforementioned form letter or, simply, no response at all. The manner in which those folks in “constituent services” respond to the concerns of those whose misfortune it is to reside in your districts effectively communicates your thinly veiled contempt for the average American (to wit, those who don’t reek of money and, thusly, the ability to influence).

As to the matter about which I had written, it concerns a large number of service-disabled veterans. I had proposed a benefit that would cost no more than twenty-dollars per year, per qualified veteran, which would generate thousands of dollars from each qualified veteran for military morale, welfare and recreation (MWR) funds by giving these veterans access to those services as well as commissaries and exchanges. Perhaps my proposal flew under your radar, as it were, because of its simplicity, negligible costs and the fact it would actually “support our troops” while offering a tangible benefit to service-disabled veterans. Mea culpa but, hard as I tried, there was no way to make it extremely complex, outrageously expensive and serve but a select few who haven’t earned nor deserve a benefit.

I had also written to every member of the Armed Services Committees in the House and Senate. They used a slightly different form letter; one that, paraphrasing, simply stated, “You’re not from my district, you can’t vote for me and your letter contained no check for my re-election campaign”. At least that is my interpretation, but I do appreciate the fact that the committee members forwarded my letters to my representatives so that my proposal could receive their further, learned non-consideration.

With regard to the fact that I am not a constituent of any the committee members, I am a veteran and what actions, or, in this case, inactions, taken by the members affect me and the other 26,000,000 veterans. But boundaries exist for a reason; in this particular case they exist so that only veterans who are constituents can receive the same level of care, concern, respect and compassion from their representatives as I’ve received from mine, Wally Herger and Diane Feinstein. A Republican and a Democrat respectively, yet both of whom, despite the great differences of their political ideologies, can agree on at least one point: veterans are deserving of their contempt.

A person of minimally functioning intelligence could only conclude that your support for those serving, who have served and/or those disabled by that service is, in the politest of terms, a steaming pile of bovine droppings reserved for cameras, microphones, veterans’ events, public appearances and other vote-pandering opportunities.

Every one of your constituents deserves a thoughtful response that actually addresses the concerns and suggestions they submit to you regardless of whether you agree with their positions or find merits in their proposals. To be deaf and blind to the average constituent or to whom your committees affect is not representative government.
